Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan has called for a temporary shutdown of Malaysia’s embassy in Iran, asking all staff to pack up and head home immediately.
He said the move follows similar decisions by other countries, as the situation in the Middle East heats up especially with Israel launching major airstrikes on Iranian targets, including nuclear sites and even a residential building in Qom.
“All our embassy personnel, including the ambassador, have been told to leave. We’ve also asked all Malaysians in Iran to get out as soon as possible.”
Still, not everyone has left. According to him, a few Malaysians, three students in Qom and one in Isfahan are staying put for now, mainly because they’re far from Tehran and it’s harder to travel.
Earlier reports said Israel’s strikes were in response to missile attacks from Iran just hours before. The situation has escalated quickly, prompting Malaysia to act fast.
Meanwhile, government spokesman Datuk Fahmi Fadzil added that the number of Malaysians in Iran is small, but efforts are underway to help them leave safely, possibly starting Friday.
