What’s your New Year’s resolutions? Some are aiming for a healthier lifestyle, while others simply want to be happy.
Singapore’s Prime Minister, Lee Hsien Long recently made it clear what he wishes for in his recent Chinese New Year message – he wants Singaporeans to have more babies, and have them earlier.
It’s a little too personal and Lee is well-aware of that. In case you are not aware, CNY 2024, which is expected to fall tomorrow (February 10) marks the 1st day of the year of the Dragon as we bid farewell to the year of the Rabbit. In Chinese families, it is considered auspicious to have a child born in the Dragon year. Not only that but dragon also symbolises strength, power, and good fortune.
“So now is as good a time as any for young couples to add a “little dragon” to your family,” Lee said in his statement.
Declining fertility rates
In his CNY message, Lee also took the time to highlight the declining fertility rates that are not only happening in Singapore but generally, around the world, and there’s no one to be blamed. The times simply have changed, and people are mostly chasing after their careers.
“Many young people prioritise developing their careers, spending quality time with their partners, and pursuing other interests.”
Lee added that it is also due to the realization of how tough it is to start a family as a marriage progresses.
While everything is understandable, Lee is not giving up hope to see Singaporeans trying to have more children (and have them earlier!).
“I hope my encouragement prompts more couples to try for a baby, although I know that the decision is a very personal one.”
“Singapore Made for Families”
Lee will also play his part by building a Singapore that’s made for families to support the people’s marriage and parenthood aspirations.
“Recently we doubled Government-Paid Paternity Leave from two to four weeks on a voluntary basis. Measures like these will lighten the burden on parents, but they are merely enablers.”
