Sarawak is proposing a railway service to be constructed across the island of Borneo that would connect three countries – Malaysia, Brunei and Indonesia.

Its Premier, Tan Sri Abang Johari Openg asserted that the Sarawak Government had submitted a proposal for the Trans-Borneo railway to the Ministry of Transport (MOT) in a meeting at Lawas yesterday (May 27).

As reported by BERNAMA, Abang Johari said that it would be a federal government project and a study on it will be conducted by MOT.

He elaborated, “This train service is expected to pass through Sabah and also connect with Kalimantan, Indonesia. Hence, there should also be discussions between Malaysia, Indonesia and Brunei, because this project may involve these three countries.”

“I think the time has come for us to establish this train service, which will definitely be able to stimulate economic activities, especially in terms of logistics.”

The Sarawak Premier also lauded the project as being able to spark local economic activities in northern Sarawak.

The island of Borneo may be seeing many projects and developments in the near future as Indonesia implements its proposed plan to move the country’s capital city from Jakarta to East Kalimantan.
