Like it or not, we have no choice but to embrace not only the morning traffic but also the late evening traffic when everyone gets off from work. Sometimes, we can’t help but wonder, how many hours have we spent in the hectic traffic alone?

A Dutch software navigation company, Tom Tom may have the answer for you. They recently released the 2022 Traffic Index Report and pointed out that the traffic congestion in Kuala Lumpur ranks 143rd among the 389 evaluated cities in the world.

“On average, it takes a driver 16 minutes and 10 seconds to drive for 10 km, which is 1 minute 4o seconds more than in 2021,” the report revealed.

The report also revealed that in 2022, the worst day to travel through KL was on April 25, Monday, when it took the drivers an average of 21 minutes to drive for 10 km. A different kind of Monday blues, perhaps?

Based on the one-way commute of 10km, Kuala Lumpur residents spent an average of 159 hours driving last year, of which 75 hours were spent in traffic congestion alone. In 2021, an average of 48 hours was spent in traffic.

Well, did it really feel like 75 hours?

The data was reported by several news publications, including Oriental Daily, and many Malaysians find the data to be underestimating.

This means many of them believed that in 2022, they did not spend only 75 hours in traffic but it was more than that.

“Wow, that’s comforting.”

“It was not only 75 hours.”

“In a country where everyone drives a car, what do you expect?”

“You mean 75 hours per month!”

“This might be the data prior to MCO.”

“Is it really that less?”

“I am stuck in the traffic for 2 hours every day. I don’t think it was only 75 hours.”

“No, it was definitely more than 75 hours, especially for those who are working.”

“Not just in KL but in Sabah too. It’s wasting our time.”

The data also reported that Thursdays in 2022 had the worst rush hour, with an average of 25 minutes and 20 seconds needed to travel for 10 km. You can refer to the full date here.

Fellow Malaysians who drive to work every day, do you think we really spent 75 hours in traffic in 2022? If you disagree, do let us know how long you think we were stuck in the never-ending traffic.

P/s: Do you think we should bring back WFH?
