Just when a few visitors of Queensbay Mall in Penang were enjoying their supper, they were also “served” a surprise that no one foresaw.

Late last night (February 14), the ceiling of the mall collapsed due to heavy rainfall, which flooded the 3rd floor of the mall. The customers at Haidilao Hotpot Restaurant had their attention on the “rainfall in the building”, and many of them took the opportunity to take pictures and videos of the scene by standing outside the restaurant. You can watch the video below which was reshared by the Facebook page Penang My Hometown.

Not long after, the ceiling right outside Mix Store collapsed, and it did not take long for the 3rd floor to be flooded, prompting many netizens to dub the incident “Valentine’s Day version of an indoor waterfall”.

“Immersive experience in Haidilao”

A couple of videos showcasing the incident have been reshared by many social media pages, and some netizens took the opportunity to come up with a description of their own for the incident.

For those who do not know, Haidilao, if translated directly, means “underwater scooping”, and netizens were certainly creative enough to joke about the incident.

“Immersive experience in Haidilao. Eat there and experience the feeling of being scooped underwater.”

“Hadilao and GSC are the best when it comes to creativity.”

“Indoor waterfall.”

In the meantime, a netizen also expressed the possible consequence if elderly folks were to slip and fall.

“If the elderlies slip and fall, you’ll know how bad it is.”

“Up close and personal kind of experience during Valentine’s Day – the feeling of real Haidilao.”

“The buildings nowadays are not constructed properly.”

“They can develop this into a new waterfall.”

Just this afternoon (February 15), Queensbay Mall responded to the incident via a statement and informed the visitors that at the time of writing, the entire level 3 has been cleaned up and businesses on that level are open to the public as usual.

However, one section on the 3rd floor has been closed to public access for maintenance works.

“Thank you for you patience and support,” Queensbay Mall said.

Fellow Penangites, what do you think of this? Were you there at the mall to get an up close and personal experience of the incident?
