The first few months of the year is often when you’d expect your company to dish out bonuses to employees as a reward for their hard work and efforts.

However, the amount of money in bonuses each individual employee gets and the way it’s presented can often be different.

Recently, a Chinese company went viral after videos surfaced of staff piling up 61 million yuan (RM38 million) in banknotes on a stage before handing out the cash to employees as year-end bonuses.

Mountain

The company was identified as Henan Mine, a crane manufacturer based in the country’s Henan province. In the video, staff piled the cash in a mountain at the company’s annual party before they invited their workers on stage to claim the bonuses.

According to South China Morning Post, the incident took place on 17 January.

In the video, people in suits and red scarves were seen taking the piles of banknotes away with the amount given to some people was so much that it required multiple people to carry it.

According to SCMP, the 3 best-performing managers got 5 million yuan (RM3.1 million) each. Meanwhile, over 30 other workers were awarded at least one million yuan (RM630,423).

An unnamed manager from Henan Mine’s public relations department said, “We held a sales year-end meeting on the night of January 17, giving 61 million yuan in total to 40 sales managers.”

The employees also took part in a money counting competition where they were offered the number of 100-yuan notes they could count within a fixed time period. The company splashed out 12 million yuan (RM7.5 million) in this competition alone, where the fastest counter was awarded 157,000 yuan (RM98,998).

As per SCMP, Henan Mines did not have any lay-offs over the past 3 years despite China’s strict Covid-19 restrictions, which led to the economy slowing down. The average salary of the organisation’s staff has also grown by 30% annually.
