It was reported yesterday that Tan Sri Michelle Yeoh had become the first Malaysian to ever win a Golden Globe, bringing joy and celebration to Malaysians and Asian people in general everywhere.

And considering how successful she has become, many want to claim her as their own.

Hong Kong’s Culture, Sports and Tourism secretary, Kevin Yeung, is receiving flak from Malaysians for claiming that Michelle Yeoh is a ‘Hong Kong’ actress.

As showcased in a report by am730, he said “Michelle Yeoh first made a name (for herself) in the Hong Kong film sector, then moved on to the international stage with her exceptionally outstanding acting skills and hard work.”

“We are really empowered by the fact that Hong Kong actors have continued to shine in the global film industry.”

He made the statement in relation to Yeoh’s Golden Globes win for actress in a musical or comedy motion picture for her role in Everything Everywhere All At Once.

Malaysians have since taken to social media to call out Yeung for getting Yeoh’s nationality wrong.

“He doesn’t even have common sense, she is a Malaysian! You don’t even do your homework, you’re in vain as the secretary.”

hk 2

“She is a Malaysian actress, nothing to do with Hong Kong, China.”

hk 3

“She’s a part of my Malaysian people, okay?”

There’s one thing foreigners should understand about Malaysians, we defend what’s ours.

What do you think about the Hong Kong politician’s statement? Do feel free to share your thoughts in the comment section.
