A few days ago, a PhD student from Yemen lodged a police report against Univeristi Malaya after he claimed to have been unfairly expelled and had his work and research stolen from him by his supervisor.

In response to his accusations, Universiti Malaya (UM) has now lodged a police report following the video shared on social media of the PhD candidate.

UM’s Corporate Communications Office in a statement said the police report made in Brickfields was aimed at denying the allegations made by the 34-year-old student.

The university also said that it will be reviewing appropriate legal action against the international student.

“It is the university’s policy that research results and scientific results become the property of the university.”

“However, the university had given the resources and opportunity for the candidate to complete his PhD including an extension of up to 3 semesters after the 12-semester maximum deadline with fees sponsored by the faculty,” it said in a statement.

UM added that it had even held several counselling sessions and appointed additional supervisors to help the candidate involved.

However, the university said the candidate was still unable to complete his studies within the given extension period.

Meanwhile, according to NST, Brickfields police chief Assistant Commissioner Amihizam Abdul Shukor has confirmed that a report had been lodged on the issue.

“There is a report, but the case has been referred to Cheras,” he said.
