In the past few months, e-scooters have exploded in popularity. This “trend” started in a few places such as the Dataran Merdeka and Cyberjaya. Many go to these places at night for dates and bonding time with their friends and family.

But following its rise in popularity, both the police and the government have warned of the dangers of using electric scooters, especially on main roads.

Recently, DBKL issued a statement on 5 June which announced that they will be stopping all e-scooter activities at Dataran Merdeka.

The statement reads:

“DBKL on 4 June from 8pm to 10pm has foreclosed electric scooter activities at Dataran Merdeka. Dataran Merdeka is a public road that is not gazetted for e-scooter activities.”

They further elaborated that the government’s directive is that no e-scooters are allowed on public roads except for gazetted spaces.

In the case of Dataran Merdeka, a DBKL officer who was patrolling the area found 2 e-scooters for rent and seized them. DBKL also confirmed that they did not issue any permits for e-scooter activities at Dataran Merdeka.

A DBKL officer has also lodged a police report against the e-scooter operator as they were obstructing an officer on duty. The seized e-scooters were brought to the DBKL Seizure Store in Jalan Lombong, Cheras.
