Flight delays and cancellations can be a sore inconvenience, especially when important plans are affected by it.

Which is why the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs (KPDNHEP) wants to ensure you know what you’re entitled to when you find yourself in such situations.

Taking to their official Facebook page, they shared information from the Malaysian Aviation Commission (MAVCOM) on the compensations you can request for when your flights are delayed or cancelled.

KPDNHEP wrote, “Passengers who experience delays or rescheduling of flights are all entitled to claim compensation to continue their journey to their desired destination.”

According to MAVCOM, those experiencing:

  • Flight delays of 2 hours or more are entitled to food, phone calls and access to the internet.
  • Flight delays of 5 hours or more are entitled to accommodation and travel expense compensation.
  • Flight cancellations are entitled to a full refund or an alternative flight.

They went on to share that compensations can be waived only if the flight is delayed or cancelled due to certain conditions.

“Compensation exemptions only apply to unforeseen circumstances by the airline involving safety risks or extreme weather.”

MAVCOM also advised the people to make a complaint to the relevant airline for any compensation claims or to visit their website for more information.
