Here’s a piece of sad news for you if you love the Merlion:

The 37m Merlion statue (the largest one) that is located in the heart of Sentosa will be demolished after 20 October 2019. It was reported on mothership.sg that the last day of operation was set on 20 October, while the actual demolition date is yet to be fixed. The closure is just a month away!

In case you’re confused, this is the statue that will be demolished…

…not this…

The chief of Sentosa Development Corporation, Quek Swee Kuan mentioned that there are no plans of relocating the Merlion statue. So, do bid the statue goodbye before it’s be gone forever.

If you’re wondering what is going to happen to the tourist spot, keep reading and we’ll tell you about it.

Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong announced that for the upcoming 20 to 30 years, a new project — Sentosa-Brani Master Plan — will take place. The master plan will be divided into five different zones, with each zone consists of interesting attractions on a large scale, and the first project that will be rolled out is the Sentosa Sensoryscape – which expected to finish construction in 2022. The master plan is to reshape and rejuvenate Sentosa Island and Pulau Brani (an adjacent island) into a new tourist attraction.

To put this into perspective: The Sentosa Sensoryscape project will link the existing Resorts World Sentosa (RWS) with the beaches in the south of Sentosa, while the master plan will redevelop the whole of Sentosa and Pulau Brani. The Sentosa Sensoryscape project itself costs S$90 million (RM273,006,000), and it will include a two-tiered 30,000 square metre access route.

As much as we’re sad that the Merlion will be torn down, we’re still excited for what the new project will bring.
