We’ve all heard the news and dreaded the fact that bubble tea was dubbed the unhealthiest drink by nutritionists, but lo and behold, the brown sugar milk tea drink that has been trending everywhere lately has taken the crown for being the unhealthiest version of all bubble tea drinks (well, at least until boba brands create something even more sugary).

Though we understand that this may not concern or stop most of you from buying and consuming this drink, you might as well know why it’s so unhealthy, right?

To break it down, tea is normally considered a healthy drink, but it’s the additives that stores add to turn the drink into a fad that makes it destructive.

According to the Mount Alvernia Hospital, black teas and green teas have been known to reduce the risk of cancer, cardiovascular diseases, and even diabetes, but when non-dairy creamers and tapioca balls are added to them, it sort of defeats the purpose and reverses the effects.

Nutritionists have set the average required intake of sugar for adults on a daily basis to be 8 to 11 teaspoons a day, though unfortunately, brown sugar milk tea obliterates that quota by containing over 18.5 teaspoons of sugar per serving.

Not to mention, the toppings you add to the drink just add more sugar to the total as they’ve been soaked in sugar syrup before being mixed in.

But fret not as you don’t have to completely drop your favourite drink, because there are options available to consume it in a healthier manner.

  • Choose smaller cups with lesser sugar content (30% and below)
  • Order lower calorie toppings such as aloe vera or white pearl, better yet, no toppings at all
  • Ask for fresh milk, low-fat milk or skimmed milk
  • Limit yourself to one or two cups per week
  • Reduce your sugar percentages step by step. Training your taste buds by gradually cutting down your sugar intake to help you stop your sugary drink cravings.

We understand how hard it can be to control yourself when it comes to bubble tea, but we don’t want to end up like those people in Wall-E now, do we?

Self-control can be hard, but with willpower comes strength!
