If you have lived in a Malaysian housing area for a couple of years, chances are you have probably seen huge tents set up by the roadside before. These tents are commonly used during festivals or celebrations where a large number of guests are expected. People would then set chairs and tables under them, providing a space where guests can enjoy their meals comfortably.

However, did you know that you can actually get fined up to RM1,000 for setting up tents by the roadside?

Turns out, putting up a tent on the roadside is actually against the law according to the Street, Drainage and Building Act 1974.

In section 46(1)(a), it states that you are not allowed to set up or permit the building of any obstruction in a public place. In the event where an individual is found guilty of the following crime, a fine of RM500 will be imposed. For the second or subsequent conviction, the individual will be fined a sum of RM1,000.
