Secondary school students, take note! It looks like there will be more changes in store for 2019 as Deputy Education Minister, Teo Nie Ching has just announced that the Ministry of Education will be launching e-textbooks. Yup, digital textbooks in place of physical ones!

According to Sinchew, she said that this move was to help students lighten the load from their schoolbags and eliminate the need for bringing so many physical textbooks to school. In an opening ceremony of an event today (October 26), she said that they plan to launch electronic textbooks for all subjects starting 2019.

Teo said that students can choose whether they want to use traditional textbooks or digital textbooks but they are still discussing the full details of this plan. She added that they are still deliberating about the tablets that will be used to read these e-textbooks – whether the tablets will be provided by the school or will students have to buy it themselves or any other ways to implement this.

The ministry would also be developing better digital textbooks that are more interactive to make learning more lively as the current ones are only basic, PDF files that can be rather boring. However, she said that interactive digital textbooks would most likely be available only in 2020.

Teo explained that this plan would only be introduced to secondary school students as too much usage of electronic devices have a more negative impact on primary school students. “We will start by allowing everyone to download basic digital textbooks to determine the usage and acceptance of this plan,” she added.
