An elderly man in Indonesia is currently going viral due to his recent marriage to a 24-year-old woman with a dowry check of IDR3 billion (~RM760,000).

However, what makes this situation odder is that there was heavy speculation that the elderly man, aged 74, had scammed the bride out of the money, which is not true.

74-year-old man in Indonesia goes viral for marrying 24-year-old bride with an ~RM760,000 dowry

According to a report by CNN Indonesia, many had speculated that the dowry cheque provided was blank and that he had disappeared after the wedding. But, it turns out that the elderly man, named Tarman, indeed married a 24-year-old woman, Shela Arika, and provided her with the sizeable dowry.

Haris Kuswanto, the head of the village the woman is from shared his surprise over the amount of public attention the wedding has received.

“We just knew the marriage was valid. We didn’t expect public reactions to be this big,” he said.

He also clarified that the rumours about the elderly man running away over allegations of fraud are untrue, and that the elderly man was, in fact, on his honeymoon with his new bride.

He was once imprisoned for fraud

The elderly groom, who runs a Samurai sword business that attracts customers from far and wide, is said to have been imprisoned once before over a fraud case.

Though, in this case, it appears that he really provided his young bride with a dowry that was allegedly initially supposed to be IDR1 billion (~RM250,000), but ultimately raised it to IDR3 billion (~RM760,000).
