During the COVID-19 lockdowns, Malaysian kids were exposed to smart devices and social media on a larger scale due to online learning.
And while smart devices are necessary for online learning, Malaysians are not exactly happy with how it’s exposing their children to social media.
According to an ‘Education Monitor’ study by Ipsos, which highlights Malaysians’ opinions on technology in education, 71% of Malaysians want social media to be banned for children under the age of 14. This puts Malaysia at the second highest after Indonesia at 79%.
On top of that, Malaysians voted the highest in banning kids under the age of 14 from using smartphones, at 51%.
Malaysians overall believe that the negative aspects of smart devices, such as access to social media, outweigh the postives and want bans in place to protect their children.
Additionally, 56% of Malaysians believe it is the responsibility of schools and teachers to take on the heavy lifting of teaching digital literacy and online safety, with only 39% believing parents should be the primary protectors.
