Polis DiRaja Malaysia (PDRM) has recorded 56 deaths out of 137 accident cases involving cyclists in the country from early January till October. Bukit Aman Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department (JSPT) director Datuk Azisman Alias said, as reported by Bernama, apart from 56 deaths, 18 others were injured and 63 were slightly injured.

He said for the period during the last year, JSPT recorded a total of 201 cases involving 107 deaths, 35 seriously injured while 59 lightly injured. Although there is no ban on cycling activities on the road, JSPT advises cyclists to always abide by the rules and regulations of the road set to ensure the safety of themselves and other road users.

Azisman stressed that cycling activities on the road can interfere with the smooth movement of traffic because other vehicles also use the same route at all times and can invite the risk of accidents. He elaborated,

“Drivers of vehicles such as lorries, buses, cars, and motorcycles are also reminded to be considerate and more careful with cyclists because they are very vulnerable while on the road. JSPT also advises those who want to carry out cycling activities to choose a suitable location and time such as in areas with fewer vehicles and not during peak hours when going to and from work.”

Apart from that, he said the owners need to ensure that the equipment and bicycles to be equipped with safety features including using roof racks only on vehicles to transport bicycles. He said any person who committed an offence while riding a bicycle on the road could be prosecuted under the Road Transport Act (APJ) 1987 and the Road Traffic Rules 1959 which carries the compound of RM1000 and RM2000 respectively.
