It’s no secret that owning a pet is one of the greatest joys life can give. Aside from accompanying us on walks or cheering us up when we’re down, owning a pet dog or cat can sometimes save us from some pretty dire situations. From laying down their lives for their master to coming to the rescue of someone drowning, here are five stories of pets saving lives as told by Malaysians.

1. When a family dog saved his master from being electrocuted
“I remember my mother telling me a story long ago about how our dog, Reagan, saved her life while they were out on a walk one morning by selflessly sacrificing himself to save her. There was danger on the road up ahead due to a collapsed power line of which my mother was unaware. Sensing the danger, my dog began to bark and ran ahead of her towards the power line causing him to be electrocuted instead. If it weren’t for my dog, my mother would not have been alive today. I’ll never forget what Reagan did and since then, I’ve treated my dogs as an extension of my family.”– Joseph, 59, Butterworth
2. When a cat alerted a 20 y/o student of her father’s seizure
“I was only 20 when this unforgettable incident happened in my family. It was a normal evening and I was alone at home with my father when I noticed my cat, Leo, acting strange in the living room while I was upstairs. I thought nothing of it at first but then Leo started meowing loudly and running around, as if trying to catch my attention. I thought Leo was only trying to get me to play with him by coming downstairs, but then I noticed something was wrong with my father. He had lost consciousness and fallen to the floor in the living room when I came down. I quickly rushed to his aid and telephoned my mum to tell her that Appa was having a seizure. She rushed home, picked my dad and I up, and brought him to the hospital. I’m not sure what prompted Leo to act the way he did but I believe he had a premonition and brought my attention to it.”– Tara, 26, Shah Alam
3. When a dog saved its owner from taking her life
“Not many people talk about mental health problems enough, especially in a country like Malaysia. And I feel like this lack of conversation has led to some of us from seeking professional help. I personally relate to this but I am thankful I had Lucky with me in this daily battle. When I was at my lowest, he would jump onto my bed to force me out of it. When I didn’t want to get out of the house, he would bark at the door to force me into taking him for a walk. I’m doing better now though but it was only looking back that I realised what Lucky was doing: encouraging me to function when I didn’t want to anymore.”– Jessica, 21, Kuala Lumpur
4. When the family dog came to the rescue of a drowning man
“Unlike my siblings, I have never learned how to swim and spent most of my family vacations in the children’s pool as I was forbidden from entering the adult one. Being the stubborn kid that I was, I decided it would be okay if I just hung on the side of the adult pool and make my way around it. Before I knew it, my hands slipped and I was drowning. Luckily, my dog Max was nearby and saw this happening. He alerted my family members, grabbing their attention by barking madly and running in the direction of the pool. I was then saved by my relative who pulled me out just in time as I could not breathe.”– Arvin, 28, Puchong
5. When a dog came to the rescue of a 4-year-old-boy
“My family and I live in a neighbourhood bordering a jungle so it’s pretty common for us to hear stories of snakes entering neighbouring homes. As a mother of a 4-year-old boy, I took all the necessary precautions to protect him from encountering these reptiles by not allowing him to play outside the house without supervision. I had a lot on my hands one evening and forgot to lock the front door causing my son to walk out on the porch. I was in the kitchen when I heard barks and screams. I dropped everything at once and rushed outside only to find my dog Bailey attacking a python and shielding my son. I only dread to think what would have happened to my son if it weren’t for Bailey being there.”– Geetha, 35, Permatang Rawa
