This is an iconic moment for all Malaysians, especially for those who were around when the first Proton Saga was launched in 1985.

On 13 December, the highly anticipated Proton X70 was launched by our Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahahthir at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (KLCC). The car is Proton’s first-ever sport utility vehicle (SUV) and also its first ever product since Geely teamed up with Proton.

“Of course, this car is not designed and built by Proton entirely but in order to be fast on the road, you have to cut corners,” Tun Mahathir said.

To make the event extra special, the organisers have requested Tun M to recreate an iconic moment which admittedly, pulled at our heartstrings.

In 1985, Tun M launched the first generation Proton Saga and he handed the car keys to his wife, Tun Dr Siti Hasmah during the ceremony. Fast forward to 33 years later, Tun M has done the same sweet gesture again with his wife. Only this time, the loving couple is much older and the car is a flagship killer SUV.

Many Malaysians were touched after seeing this scene as it reflects how far Malaysia has advanced over the past three decades ever since the inception of the first Proton in 1985. Some also expressed their gratitude towards Tun M for tirelessly running this country and making a comeback when instead, he should be chilling and enjoying his retired life.

As of October 2018, over 10,000 bookings have been made for the Proton X70. The standard variant is priced at RM99,800 and the top-spec premium variant bears the price tag of RM123,000, which is pretty decent for all the bells and whistles the X70 has.

With Geely stepping in to help out the company, hopefully, we can see the rebirth of Proton and more competitive products coming from them. Kipidap Proton!
