Indonesia records the second highest number of Covid-19 infections in Southeast Asia with 14,265 cases, 2,881 recoveries and 991 deaths at the time of writing.

Jakarta, the epicentre of the outbreak in the country, has been on lockdown since 10 April which is expected to last until 22 May. Of course, this means non-essential workplaces and schools have been closed leaving many without jobs or financial aid.

As a result of this, one citizen collapsed on the ground due to starvation in South Jakarta on Monday (11 May). According to Jakarta Post, the man is a 23-year-old who fell in front of Gandaria City shopping mall.

Witnesses of the incident were hesitant to help the man fearing he might be infected with Covid-19. Identified as Muyadi, he later revealed to local police officers that he had high gastric acid levels because he had not eaten.

The man was then taken to a nearby food stall to eat, said South Jakarta police chief Sr. Comr. Budi Sartono. The man regained his strength after eating and was told to return to his home in Depok, West Java.

In the midst of this global pandemic, let’s not take for granted the homes we have and the food that are available for us. Many out there are without jobs and without food and it can only get worse if cases were to increase. So, please stay home to reduce the spread of the virus.
