A 19-year-old vocational student in Udon Thani, Thailand, was found dead in her dormitory room yesterday (5 July) after consuming an entire 1.5-litre bottle of ketum juice before going to bed.
As shared by the ยโสธรบ้านเฮา Facebook page, the deceased, identified as Kanlaya, had, together with her roommate, visited a friend who lived nearby the night prior. While the other two drank beer, the victim consumed the full bottle of ketum juice.

Bangkok Post reported that the duo returned to the dormitory room in the Khlong Charoen community at around 5am on Saturday, where the victim began showing abnormal symptoms after falling asleep. These include having her eyes rolled back, clenching her teeth and appearing to lose consciousness.
Kanlaya didn’t respond when the friend tried to wake her, prompting the latter to call for help, but it was too late.
Local police arrived at the dormitory room at 10am and found the body of the second-year vocational student lying on her back on a bed in a second-floor room. A preliminary examination found bruises on both of the deceased’s arms, but there were no signs of assault or struggle.
Doctors estimated that Kanlaya had died one or two hours earlier, though the exact cause of death is still pending a detailed autopsy at Udon Thani Hospital.
Kanlaya’s friend told police that Kanlaya had consumed ketum juice in the past, but she had not done so for a long time.
The juice that she consumed prior to her death was reportedly bought online. The police are now investigating the origin and contents of the ketum juice bottle.
Ketum or Mitragyna speciosa, known as Kratom in Thailand, was removed from Thailand’s national narcotics list in 2021 and is now regulated under the Kratom Plant Act in the country.
