An 18-year-old Chinese national studying at the National University of Singapore attempted to extort 5 million yuan (RM2.9 million) from his wealthy parents by staging a kidnapping in Malaysia with the help of a friend, also a Chinese national.
According to a report by Sin Chew Daily, the teen’s plans were ultimately exposed, leading to him being detained by the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) and brought to the Kuala Lumpur Court, where he and his 23-year-old friend pleaded not guilty to charges.
The charges they faced were under Section 420 of the Penal Code for fraud and Section 511 of the Penal Code for attempting to commit an offence.
How they staged the kidnapping
The boy’s friend had deceived his mother through video calls from a hotel at Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman. He also sent several videos of the boy while he was tied up, gagged and beaten.
However, it was all just a show as they intended to force the boy’s mother to pay a ‘ransom’ of 5 million yuan (RM2.9 million) to a Chinese bank account.
In another report by Sin Chew, it was revealed that a police report led to PDRM officers arresting the friend and ‘rescuing’ the boy. Investigations then brought to light how the incident was self-orchestrated by the boy.
Both perpetrators have since been released on RM30,000 bail each, with each of them providing 2 Malaysian guarantors, as well as having to surrender their passports to the court.
This case has been scheduled for a hearing on May 17 (Saturday).
