It’s challenging for deaf parents to teach their hearing children to speak and communicate well, especially when the children are very young. This requires extra effort, patience, and time from both sides. Despite these challenges, kids grow up learning both verbal communication and sign language, which can be incredibly useful in the long run.

In a recent video that’s been making its rounds online, @nabilnazrol took to his TikTok to share a normal day in the life of having disabled parents.

He had to interpret using sign language

In the video, Nabil and his parents are seen attending an Islamic talk at a stadium in Melaka, where he had to interpret every word spoken during the event to his parents.

Speaking to WORLD OF BUZZ, he shared that he is a child of deaf adults (CODA), which refers to hearing children born to deaf parents.

He started learning sign language when he was 2 years old!

The 17-year-old shared that he has been learning sign language since he was 2 years old, with the help of his parents.

“The challenges of having disabled parents are that I need to always stay close to them and translate for them when they go to the mall, hospital, or other places. I also have to answer calls on my dad’s or mom’s phone.”

He explained that his parents couldn’t go anywhere without him because they always needed an interpreter to communicate in public, since not everyone knows sign language.

“Always make sure you show respect to disabled people”

Nabil highlighted that the best part of learning sign language is the constant opportunity to learn new things, and he enjoys practising with his parents.

“If anyone wants to learn sign language, it’s best to learn from deaf individuals; they’re the best teachers. And bear in mind not to misuse sign language, as deaf people can get offended easily, especially when the signs used have no meaning, which can make them feel mocked.”

He also emphasised the importance of respecting people with disabilities, noting that many don’t realise the challenges children of deaf adults face in caring for their parents.
