Remember back in those days when we dreaded going to school because it started way too early la, exams la, this la that la? Turns out even a simple thing like going to school is a luxury for some people and it’s a sad reality.

In a series of tweets that have gone viral by Miss Asfaridah (@asfanafiey94), there is a girl in Sarawak who is a SPM candidate for this year. She really wanted to go to school and study but because of financial problems at home, she can’t afford to.
Her room is full of notes and whatever books she has. Her father can’t send her to school because he couldn’t afford to pay for petrol for the car. She tried walking to school but it was way too far.
She does well academically, her results are very good and she has a strict schedule for herself. She starts studying early in the morning and never forgets to pray. When she had the chance to go to school previously, she was ostracised by her classmates and her teachers didn’t believe her problems. They then later found out it was really the truth and apologised to her.
Next week will be her SPM trial exams, but she won’t make it because her family has no petrol money. She doesn’t even have money to get some pens or mahjong paper to continue studying at home.
Miss Asfaridah then said this is the worst case that she has seen, as she works in welfare. She asked the girls (2 girls and 1 disabled child) if they’ve eaten but they said no, they only drank warm water. They said that they always fast. She then asked their father’s permission to take them out for dinner and she swears they are the nicest girls she has met because they are always so polite and grateful.
Their father used to be an off-shore engineer but once, when he came home to see his wife, all he saw was the body of his wife who had passed away while he was working. He had no choice but to quit his job because his children needed him and their relatives stay very far away. He works as a mechanic now and earns less than RM500 a month.
Another user has updated the thread and said that the family will be kicked out of their house by 10th August because the landlord wants to tear down the house to build another house.
It is stories like this that makes us realise how lucky we are. Please, if you can’t help out financially, share this out to a person that you know who might be able to help them. Thank you very much.
