A 17-year-old teenager, who was suspected of killing his mother and eldest brother, has expressed his wish to sit for the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) examination and reunite with his younger brother before the Chinese New Year.

Previously, a Malaysian teacher, Vernita Boon, and her eldest son, Jarek, were found dead at their home. Vernita’s 17-year-old son quickly emerged as the prime suspect.

The Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM)’s investigations later revealed that it was likely a premeditated act, and the suspect held a grudge after frequent scoldings from his mother. Vernita’s 13-year-old son survived the incident but sustained minor injuries.

The accused misses his family and wishes to reunite with his younger brother before the Chinese New Year

After the hearing for the case yesterday (9 January) at the Melaka Magistrate’s Court, the accused’s pro bono lawyer, Francis, revealed that the accused wishes to see his younger brother before Chinese New Year.

The court has set 11 February for the next hearing while awaiting the victims’ autopsy and toxicology report.

Francis also said that the accused, who asked about his younger brother’s well-being, is in good spirits and health. The accused also admitted that the situation was chaotic last year, leaving him unable to focus on the SPM examination, which he missed.

The accused faces two charges under Section 302 (murder) and Section 326 (causing grievous bodily harm) of the Penal Code, as reported by Sin Chew and China Press.

For the first charge, he is accused of causing the death of his mother and eldest brother at their home in Melaka on 12 June  2025, between 5 AM and 5:30 AM. He is facing a prison term of between 30 and 40 years, as well as 12 strokes of the cane.

For the second charge, he is accused of intentionally causing serious injury to his 13-year-old brother with a folding knife. If found guilty, he will face a prison term of up to 20 years.
