Teacher’s Day is here and it’s time to show some major love to the dedicated people who shaped so many of us to be the intelligent, opinionated adults that we are today!

Of course, aside from giving us an education, teachers have definitely left us with memories of school that we will never forget, which is why we decided to pay tribute by coming up with a list of things every Malaysian teacher says and does during class!

1. “Buat kerja sendiri

This was music to every student’s ears as soon as a teacher utters these words!

2. “Anyone want exam tips?”

This will be one of the few times students will actually give their full, unwavering attention to their teachers!

3. When they make you finish their sentences

Every teacher has done this. They try to explain a problem and start saying things like, “The answer iiiiss….??”

Followed by this expression, waiting for students to complete their sentence.

We’ve gotta hand it to them for trying so hard to get the class engaged, though!

4. “I will be going for kursus/mesyuarat tomorrow…”

As students, we all knew what this meant; fun substitute teachers will be taking over the class!

5. “You’re the worst class in your entire standard/form!”

Yeah, we’ve never heard that one before! We know teachers usually say this to encourage us to do better in our studies, but we also know they’re exaggerating!

6. “Everyone open your exercise books now!”

Everyone knew what this used to mean — Homework check!

This used to strike horror into every student who forgot or didn’t bother to do their homework, causing them to either scramble to fill in something before the teacher gets to them, or resign to their fates and face punishment.

7. When the teacher stays quiet until the whole class settles down

We all know that look every teacher gives when they’re done with everyone in class.

And as soon as students begin to notice them like this, everyone quickly goes quiet so class can resume.

8. “Anyone want to answer this question?”

…immediately followed by everyone in class avoiding eye contact with the teacher.

We have to admit, it’s kind of strange to see teachers sharing some personal stories. But, hey, at least it always reminds us that they are only human!

10. “Did I give homework yesterday?”

This questions is always accompanied by silence from the students… until that ONE bugger replies with a “yes!”.

11. “Since you two like to talk so much, why don’t you finish your conversation in front of the whole class?”

Well, regardless of the things they said or did, our teachers always had our best interests at heart. They’ve played a (big) part in moulding us to become who we are today and for that, we are grateful.

Happy Teachers Day to all you amazing teachers out there!
