The majority of us who are born and bred in Malaysia have an undying love for spicy food, some more than others. In fact, we practically worship spicy food and can’t bear the thought of living without it. Pass the chilli, please!
If this is you and you’re passionate about all things spicy, then you’ll probably relate to these struggles that come with loving spicy food a bit too much:
1. When your taste buds love the spice but your stomach is already on fire
Sometimes, although our mouths can take the heat, our stomachs cannot. And we usually end up regretting downing all that spicy food when we’re stuck on top of the toilet bowl and doing a number two after a few hours.
2. When you eat a meal that has absolutely no spicy dishes and you lose your appetite altogether
It is crucial that every meal we have consists of at least one spicy dish, just one will do! We don’t ask for much.
3. That feeling when you see customers at the next table not touching their cili padi/sambal at all
Your mother never teach you not to waste food ah?!
4. The struggle that comes with finding a restaurant that actually sells deliciously spicy food is real
There are restaurants that sell incredibly delicious food that isn’t spicy and then there are restaurants that sell incredibly spicy food that aren’t as delicious. Finding a shop that perfectly balances the two however is almost impossible.
5. When your food comes with cili padi/sambal but it’s never enough
Those tiny saucers are already so small, the least you could do is fill it up to the brim lah!
6. That shocked expression all your friends make when you ask to “tambah pedas” for something that’s already (supposedly) spicy
The thing is, the dish we ordered isn’t even spicy (even though it’s supposed to be)! So of course must “tambah pedas”!
7. When you tell the waiter “tambah pedas” but it’s still not pedas enough
It’s never pedas enough and we usually end up having to ask for more cili padi or something.
8. The fury and anger that engulfs your body and soul when the waiter takes the entire bowl of cili padi/sambal away from your table
…And then they give it to someone else… THE HORROR.
Sometimes we even try to hide the bowl of cili padi by placing it on a chair next to us or something. No? Just me? Okay.
9. When your friends tell you their food is insanely spicy and you get all excited but when you try it, it tastes insanely bland
Why you play with our feelings like that?
This is what happens when you’re the only one who can actually take extremely spicy food in your gang.
10. When your food arrives looking all red and spicy, but it really isn’t
#macamyes #tapibukan
This brings a whole new meaning to the saying “never judge a book by its cover”.
11. When you pick an eating place solely based on how good their cili padi/sambal/spicy food is, nothing else
Because what’s the point of eating delicious food when there’s nothing spicy to go with it?
Do you relate to any or all of the above on a spiritual level? Don’t worry, you’re not alone. Loving spicy food comes with a price, but it’s a price we’re willing to pay!
