Cemeteries in Malaysia are often portrayed as scary places where spirits wander.
And while most cemeteries are visible to people, as they’re located in large open spaces all across our country, some cemeteries have been hidden by nature.
BERNAMA recently took to their X account (formerly Twitter) to showcase a 100-year-old cemetery that became exposed when the Pedu Lake in Kedah had dried up.
They wrote, “The decrease in the water level at Lake Pedu has caused the old cemetery of Kampung Mong Gajah, which is believed to be 100 years old and situated at the bottom of the lake, to be clearly visible since the beginning of this month.”
“The situation allowed about 300 residents of the nearby villages, in addition to other locals, to visit the grave site and hold a tahlil ceremony and doa selamat to pray for those buried there.”
Among those present is a resident of the area, 62-year-old Ismail Md Daud, who explained that his late grandfather is also buried there.
“My father, Md Daud Hassan, used to live in Kampung Kuala, which is located near Kampung Mong Gajah. Kampung Kuala was also submerged like Kampung Mong Gajah, for the Pedu Dam project. But, my father has moved from Kampung Kuala because it is said that there are many mysterious diseases in the village,” he said.
It appears that several villages in the area had been submerged by water due to the Pedu Dam project in the 1960s.
Though, this isn’t the first time that Pedu Lake has dried up enough for the cemetery to be exposed as the same thing happened in 2020, which caused many to gather to conduct prayers for their deceased loved ones.
