As true Malaysians, we all share an insatiable appetite for the unique flavours that define our cuisine, including our love for budu! This mum is living proof that you don’t need to be Kelantanese to enjoy this distinctive dish.
In a recent video shared by @alanadunsmore, her Scottish mum reveals a newfound love for budu, the famous Kelantanese condiment made from fermented anchovies.
Her mum visited Kelantan for the 1st time!
Speaking to WORLD OF BUZZ, Alana shared how she married her Malaysian husband, which led her mum to visit Malaysia and stay with them for a while after the wedding.
She recounted meeting her husband, who works as a firefighter, during the last Independence Day parade while she was filming for her YouTube channel.

Alana also mentioned that her husband is from Kelantan, making it the perfect opportunity for her mum to try budu for the 1st time during her visit.
“My mum came to visit us while she was recovering from the tragic loss of her partner. It seemed fitting for her to try budu when she came to Kelantan,” she said.
In the video, her mum appears confused, asking whether she should eat the budu with the rice, even adorably trying to eat it with a fork.
Mum is a certified Kelate!
As Alana’s mum tried the budu, she looked visibly confused as she tried to process the taste, describing it as very different and salty, though not too spicy.
She also mentioned that budu has a fishy taste. When asked if she would eat it again, she responded with a yes, explaining that budu is actually quite nice.
“Luckily, my mum loved it! She would eat it at least twice a week with us now.”
Netizens started flooding the comment section to share their thoughts and reactions!
“After this, her mum might become fluent in Kelantanese.”
“Your mum is so cute! It’s delicious if you add lime, onion, and chili. If possible, try adding some boiled fish as well.”
“Don’t be surprised if she starts asking for seconds after this.”
