One of the most eagerly anticipated events come every Hari Raya Aidilfitri (asides from makan-makan and kuih raya) in Malaysia is the announcement of Petronas’ annual Hari Raya advertisements. A tradition that was started by late Malaysian director Yasmin Ahmad when she was at the helm of Leo Burnett Malaysia, our national petroleum company has never failed to bring us both laughter and tears with every incredible story they tell come Hari Raya.

Most of us probably remember growing up and watching those 10-minute long advertisements on television, whether it be last year’s Rendang SoRaya, or 2003’s Apa Nak Jadi ad, each one is almost a film in its own right, with a production budget to match.

This is their 2019 raya ad:

And for 2020, Petronas appears to have changed the traditional formula of their Hari Raya advertisements and added a touch of modern flair to it that we would never have saw coming, by using anime in place of traditional filming locations in real life!

While we’re not going to spoil it for you right now (you can watch it for yourself below), this year’s story is truly a heartwarming tribute to frontliners who may not be able to spend this year’s festivities with their close families. … And how sugar brings two families together.

So, now that you’ve seen this year’s annual Petronas Hari Raya advertisement, what do you guys think? Let us know in the comments below!

But whatever your opinion may be, we can all probably come to the agreement that we have a lot to thank for this festive reason, if we are able to spend it around family. And we definitely have our dedicated frontliners to thank for that.
