Although it is always nice to receive compliments occasionally, especially from strangers, some compliments may make you more upset than happy.

Local influencer Ceddy recently took to Twitter to share his experience with receiving backhanded compliments from his fans.

In the video, Ceddy mentioned how it feels like a compliment, but after a while, you’d realise that what was said might not be pleasant.

He recalled that one backhanded compliment he often gets from his fans is them telling him that he looks much skinnier in person, whilst in his videos, he looks fat.

“When people say these things to me, I’m just like, ‘how should I react?’.”

“Better not comment on these things,” he added.

A shared experience

His video has since garnered quite its share of attention, and plenty of Malaysians took to the comments section to share their experiences of facing backhanded compliments.

“You are actually quite pretty for an Indian.”

“If you were skinny, you’d look pretty. So does that mean I’m not pretty right now?” said another netizen.
