The world is currently experiencing a rapid global weather change and this will cause countries including Malaysia, to be hit with extreme weather starting next year. Oh no!

Due to global warming, our country is expected to experience hot temperatures as well as heavy rainfalls, which will definitely lead to catastrophic disasters like severe droughts, flash floods and landslides.

Over the last few years, the Malaysian Meteorological Department has collected data which has shown a significant constant increase in the weather activity.

The Director-general of the Malaysian Meteorological Department, Alui Bahari, explained to Utusan that based on the data collected from all their observation centres throughout the country, the annual average temperature pattern has shown an upward trend over the last 40 to 60 years.  He said,

“Extreme hot temperatures, heat waves and heavy downpours have been happening more frequently and this trend is expected to continue in the coming future. The temperatures during the dry season will become hotter and the rain during the monsoon season will be heavier, which will lead to extreme flooding.”

Alui also elaborated that the increase of the global temperature has caused the sea level to rise to 1.8 millimetres a year which has a direct impact on island nations, including Malaysia.

He also stated that the impact of the weather on humans can be reduced through early preparation. He said,

“People need to be aware of any weather changes in their area and also pay attention to any information released by the department.”

We noticed recently that the weather has been acting all weird, from hot days that are too hot to rainy days that can lead to flash floods in the most unlikely areas. We need to be wary of the changes and take the necessary steps to ensure our safety because we cannot control the weather but we can still control how we handle the situation.

Be safe guys!
