Following the controversial “Allah” shoe design, Vern’s CEO, Datuk Seri Ong Chun Sui met with JAKIM yesterday for a discussion and investigation on the matter.

In a statement issued by Jakim yesterday, it is revealed that Vern’s has explained the truth of the problem and apologised. The company has also taken immediate action by immediately withdrawing the product from more than 70 Vern’s branches nationwide.

Jakim also pointed out that they support the police’s involvement in the case, saying actions will be taken if necessary.

“If the company was intentional in the shoe logo issue, appropriate actions will taken according to the law.”

In the meantime, Jakim also sent a stern reminder to Vern’s and other manufacturers out there regarding the matter and future actions.

“Jakim does not want a similar incident to happen to Vern’s or any company that manufactures its products.”

Datuk Seri Ong also acknowledged that the incident may have offended Muslims, and he apologised once again and took it as a valuable lesson.

“I have learned from this misunderstanding and will be more sensitive and careful in the future when running my business.”

The “Allah” shoe design started to circulate when UMNO Youth Leader, Dr Akmal Saleh demanded an explanation from the company. Vern’s then explained that it was merely an inspirational design but also apologised for the confusion caused.

Now that Vern’s has clarified the matter, we do hope that the incident will serve as a reminder and lesson to all business organisations out there.
