Recently, a Chinese tourist who was visiting Singapore ended up losing her camera worth about SG$1,000 (RM3,301), after she handed the camera over to a stranger to take her picture at a popular tourist site.

According to a report by Lianhe Zaobao, the tourist, a 21-year-old student from China, visited Fort Canning Park in Singapore on Thursday (February 20) at about 12:45pm. She then gave her mobile phone and a DJI pocket gimbal camera to a woman in a white dress and straw hat, asking the woman to take photos of her.

“She was standing behind me in the queue and we had a conversation. After she took pictures for me, she handed me my phone and asked me to check the photos before she left in a hurry,” the tourist shared.

After she finished looking at the photos, she realised that her camera was still with the woman who had left.

“After I realised what was happening, I quickly searched for her in the park but there was no sign of her. I had no choice but to call the police for help. I am also responsible for not retrieving the camera (from the woman) immediately (after taking the pictures),” she added.

The student had to leave Singapore without her camera

When the police arrived at the scene, they obtained footage from a nearby CCTV camera and found that the woman was with a middle-aged man. However, due to a lack of CCTV cameras in the area, finding the duo became difficult.

Disappointed by the situation, the tourist revealed that she had just bought the camera about 4 months ago, and it was considered expensive as she is still a student.

“The customer service staff told me that the camera does not have a tracking feature, so even if I report it lost, it can still be used. But, if the other party is willing to return it, they should be able to contact me through customer service or the police,” she said.

However, she has since left Singapore on Saturday (February 22).

The police have also confirmed that they have received a report in regard to the lost camera and are investigating the matter.
