The travel and hospitality industry has got to be one of the worst hit sectors during this Covid-19 pandemic. However, this resort in Kerala, India utilised a creative approach to adapt to the scathing impact of the pandemic.

As reported by Arabnews, a Southern India luxury resort named ‘Aveda Resort’ took the drastic measure of turning their lavish swimming pools into a fish farm in order to stop their business from closing down.

Normally full of tourists from Europe and all over the world, the 150-metre swimming pool is now filled with pearl spot fishes.

Back in March, India issued a nationwide Covid-19 lockdown that prohibits hotels and resorts from operating. Aveda Resort’s general manager Jyotish Surendran commented,

“We have had zero revenues, so in June, we put around 16,000 two-month-old pearl spot fish in the pool.”

Pearl fish is a popular ingredient in Southern Indian and Middle Eastern dishes. It takes about eight months for the fish to reach full size. The resort is planning to harvest by November and export them to the Middle East.

They are targeting a revenue of around RM167,000 from the export. However this will not be enough to cover the losses accrued from closure due to the pandemic.

It will only be used to cover basic bills to keep business afloat while waiting for tourists to return.

We hope that Aveda Resort would return to make a profit soon! In the meantime, their creative approach to make the best of a bad situation is really commendable.
