A tourist hotspot, Kyoto is said to be the most beautiful city in Japan. The former capital of the island nation, Kyoto maintains its traditional roots with its ancient temples and shrines. With such a sense of heritage, it’s normal to see both tourists and locals walking around the city dressed in kimonos, which is the traditional Japanese garb.
However, there is no headdress on the kimono, so Muslim women who visit Kyoto and want to rent kimonos usually have to take their hijabs into consideration.
Well, that’s about to change because Yumeyakata, a kimono rental shop that services foreign clientele, has been lauded for producing kimonos with matching hijabs. The hijabs are specially designed with wagara (Japanese patterns) designs to complement Yumeyakata’s collection of over 500 traditional kimono patterns, blending seamlessly with the outfits.
Yumeyakata currently stocks 20 different variants of wagara hijabs appropriate for the spring season, including the sakura (cherry blossoms) and yukiwa (snowflake crystals). They have announced plans to expand the line-up further to 50 designs with different fabric types for the upcoming summer season.
They are currently available for rent at the promotional price of JP¥ 300 (approx. RM11), reduced from the normal price of JP¥500 (approx. RM19).
This move is one of several steps Yumeyakata is taking to enhance their services for Muslims. They have also set up prayer rooms in their stores and prepared guide maps to halal foods in the area. They even have a segment about these services on their website, which is available completely in Malay.
How thoughtful!
Besides that, they offer the services of make-up artists, hair stylists, and professional photographer guides for a hassle-free affair. They even provide special bags for their clients’ belongings that match their outfit for a completely authentic experience.
It’s really inspiring to see such thoughtfulness for other cultures in action, which now enables Muslim women to fully enjoy the authentic experience of wandering the beautiful city of Kyoto in picture-perfect kimono outfits.
Wow, we really have to applaud Yumeyakata for their top-notch customer service! What do you think of these kimonos with matching hijabs? Tell us in the comments!
