For many of us Malaysians, having cili potong (diced chilies pickled in soy sauce) is essential for certain meals. And normally, one small sauce plate of cili potong is enough for a person, unless you’re someone who wants to feel their tongue BURN.
Even then, when taking cili potong, it’s ethical to only take how much you need and if you need more, you can always top it up once it’s finished.
A Sabah restaurant owner, Tingvui Kevin Voo, took to his Facebook page to call out a customer who took 3 sauce plates full of cili potong, only to completely waste it by not eating any at all.
He wrote, “When making food (running a restaurant), I am most afraid of meeting customers like this. This is really too much! It’s not that I can’t look at this, but it’s because I pickled the chilies myself.”
“It’s delicious when eaten as it is, sweet and not too spicy. But if you want to have a spicier taste, why don’t you just take the soy sauce?”
In this case, the soy sauce is already soaked with the chilies, hence it would be spicy.
He questioned why the customer is willing to waste that much chilies
“Why take so much and not eat it? It’s such a waste! I feel sad, it takes a lot of time to make this pickled chilies,” he added.
No matter what the dish is, even if it’s a condiment, it is important that we not waste food. Take only what you need and if that’s not enough after finishing it, then you can take some more.
