With everything’s that happening in our country, some of us may have missed out that New Delhi, India is currently facing its worst riot since 1984. The main target for these riots seems to be Muslims who were beaten up, murdered and some even had their homes and business premises burned. Amidst these chaos, a hero has stepped forward to help those who are suffering.

The compassion shown by this Sikh uncle is extremely heartwarming during these trying times. Mohinder Singh, 53, and his son Inderjit Singh have been using their motorcycle and scooter to bring around 60-80 Muslims to safety. He told Huffington Post how he and his son went to and fro 20 times to nearby villages situated one kilometre away from the riot areas.

Both of them realised that the situation was going out of control in their Hindu-dominated neighbourhood of Gokalpuri in northeast Delhi and started to move their neighbours in batches. If it was women and children they took three to four at a time and if it was men and boys, they took two and three at a time. What’s even more endearing is that to save their lives, he tied Sikh turbans to some of the boys to hide that they were Muslims.

“I did not see Hindu or Muslim.I just saw people. I saw little children. I felt like they were my children and that nothing should happen to them. We did this because we all should act humanely and help those in need. What more can I say?”

When asked about his motivations behind his good deeds, he simply said that it was his belief and culture. Mohinder who lived through the anti-Sikh riots of 1984 just wishes no one has to ever go through whatever he suffered.

Mohinder’s bravery and kindness should remind us that whatever happens, we shouldn’t let hate seep into our hearts and eventually divide us. Kudos to Mohinder and his son for seeing people beyond their race and religion!
