After all the rave about Nasi Lemak burgers, Old Chang Kee decided to take a bold turn to introduce its own version of a hybrid Nasi Lemak snack: the Nasi Lemak Chicken ‘O which is selling at $2 (RM5.90) each; $3.50 (RM10.35) for two.
The special green puff went on sale at all Old Chang Kee outlets in Singapore as a promotional item. The unique looking puff is stuffed with nasi lemak-style sambal-slicked chicken chunks with onions, a wedge of hard-boiled egg, and fried ikan bilis (anchovies) with peanuts. Unff!
However, according to Old Chang Kee’s PR rep, the green pastry crust contains no lemak (which is weird because the snack’s promo poster is decorated with an image of a coconut). The rep also added that its green appearance is simply due to good old food colouring and pandan essence.
Sadly, this unique puff pastry is only available in Old Chang Kee outlets in Singapore, so if you’re heading there anytime soon, grab some back for us while stocks last! Pretty please?
After news of the unique puff became circulated online, some Malaysians lamented how it’s only available in Singapore. Yeah! When will it be our turn?!
“Why some of the cool stuff is in Sg? I think I will need to drop by next weekend! Anyone else up for a road trip?”
Meanwhile, others were quick to think of the next innovative snack!
However, some Malaysians think that the traditional dish didn’t need any alterations as it’s just an overkill.
All in all, Malaysians think that this new puff is innovative and if it tastes good, then why not? Now, let’s hope it comes to our shores so we can have a taste test!
