As Malaysians cautiously enter the fifth phase of the Movement Control Order, now termed as the Conditional Movement Control Order (CMCO), many of us may think to start returning to some semblance of our normal lives. However, for some residents in Selayang and Kuala Lumpur, normalcy may take much longer to come into fruition after a number of neighbourhoods were disccovered to have been fenced off by barbed wire late last night.

According to Sin Chew Daily and China Press, Taman Wilayah and Taman Desa Bakti, both neighbourhoods which are located in the Selayang vicinity, were found to have been fenced off late last night. It was reported by both Chinese dailies that the operation was meant to prevent any further spread of Covid-19 cases beyond these neighbourhoods.

It was also reported that foreign workers accounted for about 40% of the residential population in Taman Wilayah, while accounting for 60% of the residential population in Taman Desa Bukti.

In addition, residents living in the Chow Kit area of Kuala Lumpur also found themselves cordoned within their own homes after barbed wire was deployed by the authorities. This comes after Chow Kit market reported 16 new Covid-19 cases yesterday (4th May 2020), according to NST.

At this moment in time, Harian Metro has reported that just this morning (5th May 2020), the surrounding areas of Jalan Raja Bot leading into Pasar Chow Kit have been fenced off by barbed wire. Defence Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob has said that the new measures are only administrative measures to tighten the control of movement in Pasar Chow Kit during his press conference today (5th May 2020).
