The Malaysian Human Rights Commission (Suhakam) was prompted to investigate a report by the Nepal Embassy that reveals the increasing number of death of its citizens here in Malaysia.

Suhakam commissioner Jerald Joseph elaborated that the commission has received information from the Nepalese embassy that in Malaysia, a total of 1,158 Nepali migrants had died from 2018 to July 2021. As quoted by Malay Mail, he said,

“Among the main reason for the deaths are suicide, workplace accidents, pneumonia, Covid-19 and other illnesses. Maybe the Labour department or department of safety and health could also be involved in looking into the matter as well. We want to know the reason why the deaths happened and what is responsible.”

Jerald Joseph also revealed that the commission will follow up the matter closely with the personnel in the Nepalese Embassy and related agencies to get more information to further assist in the investigation.
