Dining out is a big part of what makes Malaysians, well, Malaysians. It might seem like a fun and harmless treat, but have you ever thought about how much it’s really hurting your wallet?
Research shows that Malaysians spend an average of RM800 to RM1,200 a month on eating out, according to the National Security Council.
“Being mindful of food waste can help control spending”
They pointed out that there are plenty of ways to cut back on daily expenses, like cooking at home and packing lunch for work or school, which could save a lot on eating out.
“Another tip is to shop for what you actually need and buy only what’s necessary. Storing food properly, like freezing it, can help avoid waste. Just being aware of food waste can really help control your spending.”
They also mentioned that being smart about spending is key to keeping your budget in check.
M’sia has the highest spending on food and healthcare
According to the Consumer Price Index (CPI), spending on food and healthcare has gone up significantly, with these costs being among the highest, as reported by The Malaysian Reserve.
In Malaysia, basic food items like sugar and rice are priced lower compared to other producing countries. For example, sugar is sold at RM2.85 per kg and rice at RM2.96 per kg, which is much cheaper than in Thailand, where sugar costs RM3.20 per kg and rice RM9.23 per kg.
These low food prices are contributing to unhealthy eating habits, which are driving up medical costs in the country.
