Since we entered into the post-pandemic phase over 2 years ago, there has been an increase in mass outdoor activities in our country, including the return of festivals and concerts.

However, not everyone is a fan of these concerts, especially if they involve foreign musicians or artists which certain sections of our society deem as promoting cultures that are not aligned with ours.

With that in mind, did you know that going to concerts is actually beneficial for one’s health?

In fact, a study found that going to concerts or gigs every 2 weeks could extend your life expectancy by a whopping 9 YEARS!

In a study commissioned by O2, a British telecommunications service provider and conducted by Patrick Fagan, an expert in behavioural science and Associate Lecturer at Goldsmith’s University, it was found that just 20 minutes of attending a concert can result in a significant 21% increase in feelings of well-being.

Furthermore, the study found that many scholarly research had also directly links high levels of well-being with a lifespan increase of 9 years, hence establishing a direct link between gig-going and longevity.

In the study, bespoke psychometric and heart tests at a range of well-being activities, including going to concerts, yoga and dog walking found that:

  • Gig-going experience for 20 minutes increased participants’ feelings of well-being by 21%
  • Doing yoga increased well-being feelings by 10%
  • Dog-walking increased well-being feelings by 7%

Specifically, when going to concerts, the key markers across the happiness spectrum showed increases, including feelings of self-worth by 25%, closeness to others by 25% and mental stimulation by an impressive 75%.

Besides that, accompanying research showed a positive correlation between the regularity of concert attendance and well-being.

Those who attend live concerts once a fortnight or more were the most likely to score their happiness, contentment, productivity and self-esteem at the highest level (10/10), suggesting that regularly experiencing live music is the key to building a long-standing improvement to well-being.
