Stinky tofu can be a gourmet food and a delicacy to some but it can also be a stench to others. A stinky tofu vendor in Kluang, Johor recently had to accept his fate and cease the operation for the day when the City Council chased them away.

But let’s not blame the City Council as they were merely carrying out their duty, following the complaints from the public about the stench. In one of his Facebook posts, Leon, the owner of the Stinky Tofu Food Truck said that he has been trying many ways to improve the ventilation system.

Unfortunately, it didn’t help much as he operates his food truck in an outdoor space and not inside a restaurant. Leon added that he operates his stinky tofu food truck at multiple places in the state but he has never been approached by the authorities except in Kluang.

Speaking to WORLD OF BUZZ, Leon said that he is still running his business as usual in Kluang, but not at the place where he was asked to leave – Parkland in Tasik Indah. He decided to leave the place after numerous complaints from the shop owners in the area.

“I lost count on how many summons and warnings I have received from the City Council,” he added.

“Honestly, I’m tired of all these”

Leon also told WORLD OF BUZZ that the constant visits from the authorities have stressed him out as his intention is only to make a living.

“I’m not robbing and I’m not stealing. Why do people do this to me?”

Leon, on the right

Leon has been running his stinky tofu business for 7 years now, and the warnings that he has been receiving once every few months are making him tired. He has nothing but only 1 request which he hopes the public will indulge.

“Please understand me and don’t ruin my source of income.”

Despite leaving Parkland for good, Leon will continue to run his stinky tofu business at different places every day (except Monday), such as Yong Peng Night Market, Batu Pahat, and Kahang.

The smell of stinky tofu can truly be unpleasant to many people, but do you think Leon should’ve been chased away from the place he is trying to earn a decent living?
