A Sri Lankan man tried to obtain a Malaysian passport from the Penang Immigration Department by posing as a child, but his plan was thwarted when officers caught on.
Nur Zulfa Ibrahim, Director of the Penang State Immigration Department, said the man showed up at the UTC Komtar Immigration Office in hopes of applying for a Malaysian International passport.
He was accompanied by a woman who claimed to be his “mother”
According to Berita Harian, the man submitted his identification documents claiming to be a 10-year-old boy, and he was accompanied by a Malaysian woman who said she was his mother.
The supervising officer noticed that the individual’s physical appearance did not match that of a 10-year-old and that he struggled to answer questions.
His speech didn’t match the dialect used in Malaysia
Upon further investigation, it became clear that the individual couldn’t speak Malay, and an Indian officer noted that his speech didn’t match the Tamil dialect used by Indians in Malaysia.
The investigation revealed that the woman was not actually the boy’s mother but had been paid to assist with the application while the boy, admitted he was a Sri Lankan national.
Both the woman and the man were arrested under the Passport Act of 1966 for investigation and further action by the department.
