Always be careful of what you consume!
On 28 June, the Singapore Food Agency (SFA) issued a press statement on a Malaysian-made product named KetoDiet Coffee.
In the statement, they said that the coffee had been found to contain a banned substance, Sibutramine.
Sibutramine is a prescription-only weight-loss medicine that has been banned since 2010 by the Singaporean government for its adverse effects on an individual’s health.
“It causes an increased risk of heart attack and stroke. Other serious health consequences reported with its use include heart problems and central nervous system disorders (e.g. psychosis and hallucinations). Seizures have also been reported with sibutramine.”
In addition to that, the SFA has also asked all e-commerce sellers to immediately take down the listings of KetoDiet coffee.
It is said that this product was marketed as a weight loss product that claims to boost one’s energy and break down fats instantly.
Those who had purchased it were asked to not consume it and those who have consumed it were asked to seek medical advice.
Sibutramine is also a banned substance in Malaysia since 2012 and a quick check on Malaysian e-commerce platforms has found that this coffee is still being sold for RM56-65 per box.
Remember, there is no shortcut when it comes to weight loss. Products claiming to help you lose a lot of weight in a short period of time could potentially be harmful, so do your research!
