Finding out that your partner has an incurable disease or a serious illness, like cancer, can tur your world upside down in a matter of seconds. But there are ways to deal with the emotional rollercoaster and keep living your life as best as you can.
In a recent viral post, Assisi Hospice took to Facebook to share a touching story about a 44-year-old Singaporean patient named Yiu.
In the post, Asisi Hospice revealed that when Mr. Yiu found out he had end-stage liver cancer, after experiencing constant pain in his abdominal area, his wife was pregnant. Knowing he wouldn’t meet his unborn child or be there for her, he gathered all his strength in his last moments to make special memories for them.
It was revealed that Mr. Yiu received his diagnosis in February 2023, with doctors deeming the tumor too large for treatment. Palliative care was recommended, and he was admitted to Assisi Hospice’s Inpatient ward in March 2023, just a month later.
Mrs. Yiu shared Mr. Yiu’s desire to leave behind a lasting memory. An art therapist suggested creating a hand cast, allowing their child to hold it after birth.
Despite his weakened state, Mr. Yiu persevered, even managing to create an additional hand cast while holding his wife’s hand.
It was the revealed that Mr. Yiu passed away just the day after the hand cast was made. When the hand cast was completed, the care team presented it to Mrs. Yiu at his wake.
Their art therapist even went so far to help create an artwork with handprints of his family. Their music therapist also recorded his heartbeat, as a memento for his unborn child.
“The hand cast looks very real, you can see the lines on his hand. When I miss him, I will look at his photos, and also the hand cast that we made.” said Mrs. Yiu
The touching story has left many tearing up, prompting the comment section to start pouring in.
