OCBC Bank has recently introduced the use of face verification at ATM machines in Singapore starting with a total of eight machines, so far. This function is however limited to checking one’s account balance only. According to CNA, the withdrawal function using face verification will be introduced to about 550 ATMs all over Singapore starting this June.

Although digital banking is currently being heavily promoted, there are still a large number of customers who prefer to use the ATM. With the face verification function introduced, it will eliminate the need for the customer to bring their ATM cards. So no more accidentally leaving your ATM card at home.

The verification process is done based on the database of four million Singapore residents. Once the face is verified, a customer can proceed with their ATM transaction. Some might worry about using their faces for verification as this opens up opportunities for thieves to use their pictures during the verification process. To combat this, a liveness-detection technology will be used during the verification process to prevent pictures, masks and videos to be used to fool the system.

You can watch the whole process here:

The verification process will only take a short while so customers would not have to worry about taking off their masks momentarily, especially during the pandemic. Hopefully, the launch of this new verification method at ATMs will be a successful one so that we can also see it being used by banks in Malaysia. Imagine only having to bring your IC and your driver’s license around because every transaction will either be with your biometric verification. It would be so convenient for everyone!
