The Selangor State Government is planning to gazette Satay Kajang as a heritage food next year.
As reported by Berita RTM, Selangor State Heritage and Malay Customs Corporation chairman Borhan Aman Shah said that the gazettement is an effort to promote the state as a destination for the popular dish.
Borhan, who is also the State Housing and Culture Committee Chairman added that the proposal would be presented to the State Executive Council by the end of 2023.
He elaborated that Satay Kajang is part of Selangor’s identity and is a favourite of Malaysia’s multi-racial society as well as foreign tourists to the country.
The gazettement of the dish will start with a thorough study of its history, background, size, preparation, gravy and presentation. In fact, the movement to gazette Satay Kajang as a heritage dish started in 2011.
The dish can be traced to the year 1917 started by Tasmin Satiban and his younger sibling, Rono. Given the name ‘Satay Kajang’, the traditional dish is now one of the main reasons why people come to Kajang.
Borhan asserted that the proposal to gazette Stay Kajang as a heritage food is expected to receive approval in early 2024. Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari is expected to announce the official gazettement.
