It’s the “season” of rising prices and if you dine out a lot, you’ll probably notice how some restaurant operators have increased the prices of their menus. While that is not surprising, here’s a question for you to think about. How much are you willing to pay for a stick of satay?

A Malaysian, Adie recently purchased 15 sticks of chicken satay, and another 15 sticks of beef satay, which cost him RM2.90 and RM3.90 per stick respectively. According to the receipt he shared on Twitter, Adie also bought 2 packs of Nasi Impit with onions, which cost him RM5. In total, he had to pay RM107!

We have to say, that’s pretty expensive just for satay!

Adie also joked and said, “did they just charge me next year’s price? Look at the date”. It’s probably a typo but the receipt shows 12th March 2024. Baffled by the price, Adie decided to seek the netizens’ take on the price and find out if RM107 for 30 sticks of satay is considered common in KL, or not.

“It tasted pretty good, but it is the 1st and last”

Speaking to WORLD OF BUZZ, Adie said that he bought the satay from a restaurant in Cheras, KL. It wasn’t his plan initially to have skewered meat for late dinner.

“It was around 10pm, my sister and I were hungry. We were looking for food, but the satay restaurant was the only one that was still open.”

Adie, who is from Shah Alam said that the restaurant has 2 versions of satay – Budget and Original.

“I took the original version. I thought the budget version was around 80 sen to RM1, and the original one around RM2 to RM2.50. But I was shocked when I paid for it,” he explained.

Fortunately, despite the price, Adie said that his family enjoyed the satay as they liked the taste, and said that “they tasted pretty good”.

When asked if he’ll return to the same place again, without any hesitation, Adie told WORLD OF BUZZ,

“No, once is enough. I’ve had better satay at other places, which cost me around RM1 per stick.”

What do netizens think?

If you scroll through Adie’s tweet, many netizens agreed that the price is too much just for satay. Local popular food vlogger, Ceddy also shared his take on the price.

“The question of cheap and expensive is pretty subjective, it depends on affordabili – No, scratch that! This is way too expensive! OMG is this Wagyu satay or what?”

“To me this is expensive. A chicken satay usually costs around RM1.50 or lesser per stick. I’ve ordered 30 sticks of chicken satay before, and it was only RM40++.”

“This is satay from the future. Perhaps in 2024, the B40s will be earning RM5K per month.”

Fellow foodies, what do you think of the price? Is the price justifiable in KL? In the meantime, do share with us if you know any place that serves a mean and tasty satay!
